Neighborhood Residents,

You're undoubtedly aware that this weekend's storm is predicted to be a fierce one. Here are some suggestions derived from the excellent presentation by the Palo Alto REDI team. Many thanks to Mary Carlstead for her work in organizing this information.


STORM PREPARATIONS
We should be prepared for this storm, those to follow, and any other natural occurrence or disaster. Our Neighborhood Watch Disaster Team urges the following:

1. Have flash lights, extra batteries, and Coleman-type lanterns on hand.
   
   
2. Monitor:
   
   • KPIX TV (Ch. 5), KCBS, and Stanford 90.1. FM
   • City of Palo Alto Emergency Info Line 329-2420
   • City website for Creek levels
     
     
3. In flood-prone sections of Walter Hays move your autos down the street to at least past #143 if the situation warrants, and do it early. Ask those residents with space in their driveway for permission to park your car alongside theirs. Residents of other streets prone to ponding can do the same. Asking early will save worry -- and potential water damage -- later.
   
   
4. In past flood-prone sections make evacuation plans now, and find which neighbors can take 'guests'. Call Mary Carlstead if you can take in neighbors. Also please send your e-mail address to Mary Carlstead at: secretary@dsfna.org
   
   
5. Stock some ice.
   
   
6. If your stove is electric, be sure to have non-perishable food on hand that does not need cooking. Never use a charcoal stove inside the house (carbon monoxide poisoning).
   
   
7. Keep your cell phone charged. Do not call 9-1-1 from your cell phone. (This is routed to the CHP in Santa Rosa.) Cell phone calls should be made to 321-4433, Palo Alto's emergency hot-line.
   
   Particularly during a serious storm or other emergency situation, call 911 from your home phone, but please do so only when life or safety are threatened.
   
   For assistance, call your neighbors first -- unless you need a paramedic or the Fire Department.
   
   
8. Keep some extra money and change on hand.
   
   
9. Volunteer to do a "night shift" to monitor street water levels and Creek levels if the situation looks ominous.
   
   Shifts
   10:00 p.m. to midnight
   Midnight to 2:00 a.m.
   2:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
   4:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.
   6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.
   
   
10. Be sure to keep gutters free of leaves and other debris.
    
    
11. Check on neighbors, particularly seniors and/or others who may have special needs.
